Digipak Advert Construction logos

With a black background on my poster I also have to consider the colours of my logo. The existing black and red background would not show u and would be hard to recognise on this background.

I experimented with a few different gradients of colours using white and grey and a base so they would be visible.

None of these gradients make the band logo look professional as the white to red looks slightly pink.

I have made the logo white and included it for now. I may change this in the future once the image is on the poster.

The record label I  have chosen is Fueled By Ramen. This is because they represent Indie bands and they are not extremely well known. There are also a few diff

I am ging to use the squad logo that has Fueled in large font. This is because it fits the best into the corner and the bold writing is easily visible even when the logo is small.

Edit 3 (Final Cut Pro)

Our group made the decision to swap software early on the the editing process to Final Cut Pro from iMovie. This was because of the lack of layering and also because the minimum shot length on iMovie is only 0.2 seconds so if we want to use flashes or extremely quick cuts we would struggle.
In this edit we looked at our previous edits and came to the conclusion that the shots are mostly static and also all in the same location to start. With this edit we used new shots from the skate park location to add to the narrative and to also add some camera movement. These shots as well as the ones from the field of just lip syncing added movement and also varied camera angles and shots.

Ideas for creative shots

During filming we found out that we needed some more creative shots to make our music video match our genre. We decided to look back at more music videos for ideas. Justin Biebers What do you mean has lots of creative camera work and editing. For example the video uses focus very effectively to change what the audience is looking at. The focus of the shot starts on the women lying on the bed in a shot and then changes so you can see the male characters emotion. This may be a technique we could use in our narrative section to isolate different characters. Other things i also liked were the disjointed shots such as the shot of the clock. This variation of different shots is effective for adding quick editing to a scene by using cutaways. We may use shots such as spray paint cans that are not directly related to the narrative.

Creative shots

Editing to the beat

In this stage of editing we thought about ways in which we can build up the video before the chorus. We added a black image to iMovie and made it as short as we could (0.2 seconds) and then added it to one of the sections where there are distinctive drum beat before the chorus. The flash to black effect builds up the song as quicker editing will match the song as it heads to the chorus.

Wednesday 7th shoot

We are filming partially inside on Wednesday the 7th and partially outside so the weather needs to be consitent with our other shoots. The overcast weather is perfect for what we need and is not too cold so we can film with our actors for a long duration inside.

Narrative shoot

Our next shoot will partly take place in the school hall of the Castle School. We have booked an hour slot to film on Wednesday the 7th at 10am. For this task we will need:

The narrative section filmed here will include a comedian telling jokes or performing a card trick in an almost empty hall with our main actors clapping unenthusiastically then leaving.

Edit 2

This is our second edit with just our first shoots footage. This is why there are gaps for narrative and for shots which we are yet to film.

Smoke Grenades

These are the smoke grenades we chose to use for our music video as they are of high quality and come in a wide variety of colours. This is the official website for the smoke grenades so are quite expensive so we will have to find them for cheaper somewhere else, like amazon.

We ended up purchasing three blue grenades from Amazon for £16.99 instead of £24 on the official website. These were delivered a few days later allowing us to start filming that weekend.

This is the a picture of the smoke grenade after we had used it, showing the temporary damage it caused to the skatepark. The smoke grenade lasted roughly 30 seconds and was long enough for the shot that we wanted.

Edit 1

This is the first edit of the video we have attempted after filming one shoot with the new actor. In this edit we have completed the intro and the first chorus. After looking at our footage for the first time together we have seen which shots do not fit into the video well so we will need to reshoot certain aspects. There is also a lack of close up shots which we will address with a reshoot of close up lip syncing in a new location.

Digipak Poster Ancillary Task

After looking back at my research and also looking at more posters. I have seen that the main codes and conventions of one are the pictures of the band or artist with the title of the band and song in large font. The features are often websites and

Initial editing

With this task we added the shots from our first shoot together to see what we could create. It also let us see if iMovie would be the right format to edit on. There are some shots where really fast editing is needed which we shall use Premier Pro for and we may also use after effects to create flashing effects on some beats. The areas where we may need use Premiere Pro for are the build ups to the choruses and the chorus itself. After completing the creative task on a 30 cut chorus we realised that an effective chorus should have many cuts.

Experimenting with iMovie editing

With this editing we attempted to use quick cutting in time with the quick drum beat between the chorus and verse. We found that the shortest time length of a shot could be 0.2 seconds. This is not short enough to look effective and to keep up with the drum beat. We want a flashing effect that we must use Premiere Pro for.

Raw footage

After a detailed look at raw footage we have decided to change our actor for the lip syncing role. We decided this because the character does not match our narrative of brother well. This decision means that much of our footage will be unusable however many shots are shaky and out of focus so there little lost through doing this.

Brand design 2

\

Firstly I used the liquify tool to add the drops coming off the right X. I did this to add flare to the image and also to create an effect of the text being sucked off the page.

Next I started adding a gradient of black to red to the text to stick with the codes and conventions of red for band logos. I used different colours and came to a pure black to red gradient that starts to take effect when it crosses the I.

\

The last step to my logo was to create a black duplicate to use as a shadow when put on 80% opacity. I merged the layers so I could more the image together.

On my Digipak cover the logo will likely be placed in the top left of the screen like in the picture above.

SD card

We asked other media groups about the sizes of SD cards they used. Reece Chambers used a 32 gb SD when filming in 4K. We will film in HD as the upload time on 4K footage is extreme. So a 32 gb SD will be sufficient.

Weather update

The weather situation has changed since we last looked. There is now a slight chance of rain when shooting which we will have to take into account when filming with the drum kit outside and with the   drone we may be able to use.

Shopping list continued

In Thornbury there is a Screwfix which we thought would sell lights. After looking online we found a few that we thought would fit our criteria of:
1. Portable
2. battery powered
3. Small
4. Bright
5. Has a stand

The £22.99 LED light fits the criteria. After visiting screw fix we talked to a employe who confirmed that this meets our requirements. We will buy two lights and charge them before shooting. They will be useful for filming in the garage and in the pathway. Other lights were either dimmer, more expensive, not portable or came without parts such as bulbs which would be no use to us.

Morti Drumming Practice

1st: On the first attempt I asked Morty to simply air play play the drums so that we could see how effective it was. the conclusion was that if we did any sort of close up shots then it is very obvious that he is not actually playing the drums. Although when not actually plying the drums it allowed him to put more effort in the overall performance this means that we will not use this affect in the our music.

2nd: On the second attempt I asked Morty if he could simply play the song without the music in the background this was to check that he could play the song and that he didn't need the music in the background to get the right timing. He was able to do this with no problem at all and so this made me very confident about using him in our video.

3rd: In the final attempt i asked if he could make it look as if he was playing the song with it on in the background. He was able to do this with very little problems and once he got in time with the song it is very hard to tell the difference between forty and the drumming in the song. He also put in a convincing performance that we will need for our music video.

Learning comment
From this practice we have leant that Morty is more than qualified to be an actor in our music video. He can play the drums to a high standard while acting to convince you that it is his song. He also did a small amount of lip syncing which we did not ask for him to learn which only shows how ensued he is to be in our video.

Weather factor

Our filming days have been set as Sunday 20th and Wednesday 23rd.

To make sure that we could film we needed to check the weather. The days we have chosen to film have similar weather conditions so there would be no confusion with narrative performances. The temperatures are 10 and 8 degrees C so our actors would wear coats and hoodies. It would be cloudy so not as bright as it could be. This is why we may buy a Screwfix artificial light too use in some shots.
For scenes like the garage scene which is indoors this will not matter. However the pathway scene may matter as it will have limited light as it is. So artificial light will be important for this.

Album cover

I have started to plan my Album cover and have thought about putting an image inside another on for the front cover.

I will use one of or both of my characters

Finding a performer

As we are now looking for our actors, one four close family friends happens to be in a semi professional band (Awakening Hyperia). We needed someone who had good stage presents, can convincingly play the drums, met our genre age requirements and very importantly has some experience in performing in music videos. After a short conversation he informed us that he and his band were preforming at the Fleece Bristol. To get a better understanding of how he presented himself we decided that we would go along to watch. Although (in his band) he is the lead guitarist we were still able to get a very good and clear grasp as to how good his stage presents is. The lead guitarist is arguably the most watched part of the band especially in solo sections and so he is not shot of confidence which is exact what we want. When it comes to experience he again dose not fall short.

As there band is singed by a record label the have already released a music video named 'Breath' which is on Vevo. After also viewing the music video it only reinforced the fact that we are going to use Morty in our music video. On top of this it also means that he understands the time and commitment that is involved in filming and so we will not have to worry about him waiting time or cancelling last minute.

Pitch reflection

After giving our initial pitch our class helped us find positive aspects of our plan which will work well and also parts which we have missed and nee to improve or alter. Some of the positive aspects people picked out included the amount of time we had taken to plan our location shooting. Using varied locations is important to creating a professional music video. We matched our locations to the genre by having lots of outdoor locations and also a garage instead of a studio to reflect the indie style.  Other positives picked out were the amount of time we've spent planning contingencies such as a lack of actors available and the lighting in our video. We have a back up actor Reece Chambers in case Will is not available and also have bought an artificial light in case our set isn't as light as it could be.

A problem picked out was the moving of heavy props and actors around different locations. For example we will need to move a drum kit around when shooting. We should have two cars available for this and also are only taking the majority of a drum kit not a full sized one. Another potential difficulty we could face is with our drumming. We did not mention that our actor Morti can actually play the drums. We have made sure he knows the song and can play on the beat. Also some mentioned that busy roads may be an issue. We have asked locals and have come to the conclusion that a road in Aust that is straight and quiet will be effective for filming.

Some advice we were given was to inform actors on dates to make sure of availability. We have also been advised to film all of the drum shots on one shooting day to avoid hassle. Something I need to consider is practicing with our actors as lip syncing can be different to actually singing as you need to express yourself to the camera.

Visiting locations

Skatepark

This will be the second location where we introduce the caricatures and start the narrative of the day and so this will be filmed in the morning of one of our filming dates. This specific ramp will be used for a wide establishing shot so that starts the narrative of our two caricatures getting arrested.

In the opening moments of the narrate one of our actors will have to slide down this ramp so we will meet to ensure that they have the correct footwear so that they do not fall over. we will also have to ensure that it is not filed on a day where it is misty or raining.

The second and third ramp we use in the skatepark will be sets for both performance and narrative switching between and dropping them in as the story board shows. the second ramp will also be the one used for the smoke grenade scene.

Pathway

The pathway will be used for both narrative and performance. This will be the location we shoot the can scene and also some long shots of the drumming. We may also set up artificial light that will be in shot as if it was being filmed in a studio but a behind the scenes twist.

Carpark

Although we have some other carparks in mind we have decided that we will defiantly be using this set for some of our video. This wide shot will be used in the same way as the pathway with the drums the same distance away from the camera. This set may also be used for the action scene where our character steals the car and is arrested. When using this set we will have to be carful of the general public trying to actually use the carpark.

Also in the carpark, we found a very interesting place where we can film some of the performance where we set the drums on the small hill. we may also utilise some time-laps while in the carpark.

prison

For the scene where we need a prison set (the beginning and end) we have decided to use a very plane room. we will make the room (to the best of our ability) in to somewhat of a noticeable brattish prison. the actor will also be dressed in cloths to help the audience to recognise the straight away.

Brand logo plan

My first attempts at creating a brand logo were quite successful. I used the idea of Roman numerals and the number 19 as well as the idea of using red to make a visual brand.

Creating a brand

I want to use the idea of numbers for my brand as they are extremely simple and easy to remember making for a recognisable brand. I think that the branding of Twenty One Pilots is effective as they use numbers that are written out as words. However I want to create the opposite where there are only numbers. This will create a simple brand that is very recognisable. I decided to use Roman Numerals when creating my brand as alternative rock/pop would fit a unique kind of brand.

When looking at the roman numeral chart I wanted numbers which are symmetrical and represent a relatively small amount. The number 19 was perfect for this. XIX is a symmetrical shape which would be very visual on a website or poster.

After simply searching Band Logos I found these images on Google search. I can see that this genre often uses just the name of the band as a logo to create their brand. The colours most shown here are red and black which may influence my design as it should fit into regular codes and conventions of a band. Some of the ones that are the most visual to me are the Rolling Stones logo which has no brand title emphasising how effective the brand is as the audience immediately knows what the logo represents.

Another one of my favourite brands here is the Red Hot Chilli Peppers one using red grey and black. I think that on the black background it stands out well and I think that it would look effective on digipaks and posters. These two designs have influenced me to possibly include red on my brand. This will then fit into the codes and conventions of my genre and also be very visual to the audience.
